A leather water bottle belonging to explorer Robert O’Hara Burke has fetched more than a quarter of a million dollars at auction in Melbourne.

The $286,750 sale price was more than three times what the artefact was expected to fetch.

Sotheby’s had originally estimated the water bottle would sell for between $60,000 and $80,000.
