Irish paintings for London auction

A collection of paintings by some of Ireland’s best-loved artists is to be auctioned later this year at Sotheby’s in London.
The annual Irish sale in May features soughtafter works by Jack B Yeats, and significant early paintings by Sir John Lavery and James Barry.
The Sotheby’s catalogue includes 14 works with guide prices ranging from £4,000 to £600,000. It includes the Yeats water-colour The Black Avenger which is expected to fetch at least £18,000.
Sir John Lavery’s Bathing, Lido, Venice from 1912 is also expected to generate great interest and is likely to reach in excess of £600,000.
Other highlights include James Barry’s King Lear and his daughter Cordelia which is currently on display in Cork’s Crawford Gallery. It is has a guide price of £300,000 to £400,000.
Roderic O’Connor’s A Breton Girl is valued at £300,000 while his Nature Morte Fruits is expected to fetch £200,000 and Still Life with Pink Roses and Mimosa around £80,000. The paintings have come from all over the world and represent one of the most valuable collections of Irish art to be offered in London.
