More than 170,000 people in the European Union now rely on eBay sales as their primary or secondary source of income. eBay President and CEO Meg Whitman told a Brussels press conference that, at a time when Europe was striving to create jobs and promote small businesses, the figures showed that the internet allows European SMEs and entrepreneurs to compete and succeed in the global market. An online survey found 170,732 people depended on eBay for about one-quarter of their income, while more than 88,427 earned three-quarters or more of their income through eBay sales. The survey covered sellers in the 11 markets in the EU where eBay has a website.
