European Court of Justice raises taxes on art imported into the UK

British art dealers must pay a higher rate of tax on works imported into the UK for auction, the European Court of Justice has ruled.
Until now auctioneers have paid a reduced tax of 5% on imported art to be sold at auction.
The ruling means they must now pay the standard VAT of 17.5%.

George Galloway’s eBay auction sabotaged

George Galloway’s attempt to auction the tracksuit top he wore on Celebrity Big Brother has been sabotaged by eBay users putting in “astronomical” bids.
The Respect MP, selling the garment to raise money for the Palestinian charity Interpal, removed it from the website after a bid of £150,000 was received.
