WHILE many farmers struggle to get a realistic financial return from their farms, the price of farm land continues to rise.
A national survey of farm sales published in the past week showed that the price of what would be considered agricultural land rose by an average of E7,000 an acre in the first six months of this year.
The average price of land sold at auction was E25,889, up from E18,870 last year.
The figure is based on the sale of 90 farms sold at auction reported up to May 31.
The survey in the Irish Independent showed that the price of land sold at auction ranged from E7,000 an acre for a 40 acre residential farm in Cavan up to E236,666 an acre for just three acres in Kilmuckridge, Co Wexford.
