Police running Scotland’s knife amnesty were amazed when a worried pensioner handed them his collection of more than 500 letter openers.
The man had spent more than 40 years building the massive hoard.
But he gave it all up because he feared crooks would break into his home, steal the openers and use them as weapons.
Police in Edinburgh are now trying to work out what to do with the collection. They have called in auctioneers to value it and it may end up in a museum.
PC Stephen McGill, based at Edinburgh’s Torphichen Street police station, went to the man’s home in the west end of the city to pick up the letter openers.
He said: “Just about every drawer in the owner’s home was filled with them.
