Two early pictures of the celebrated Roslin Chapel near Edinburgh, known from this year’s blockbuster ‘The Da Vinci Code’ as the resting-place of the Holy Grail, will be offered in Bonhams’ Scottish Sale on August 25th.
Dating from the mid-19th Century, thus coinciding the advent of photography, they comprise an architectural composition in an ornate gilt frame by William Paton Burton, and an image of Sir Walter Scott sitting in the chapel in 1854 by Scottish Pre-Raphaelite John Adam Houston. Each is estimated to realise up to £3,000.
Specialist Chris Brickley says : “Images of Roslin have always inspired particular enthusiasm, but in the light of recent publicity we may expect more widespread interest as these are relatively early images by noted artists.â€
