George Best note for auction

Published November 15th, 2006

Notes commemorating Northern Ireland soccer legend George Best have been offered for sale at six times their face value - before they have even been released.
More than 40 auctions offering the notes are taking place on the online auction site eBay - some asking £30 for one note.

The Ulster Bank limited edition £5 notes is a tribute to the Manchester United footballing genius marking the first anniversary of his death.

Application forms for the notes will be available from Ulster Bank branches in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland or online from Monday.

The notes will then be available to purchase at any Ulster Bank branch in Northern Ireland from 27 November.

An Ulster Bank spokesperson said there had been a huge amount of interest in the notes - from as far away as South Africa and the United States - but that there was no need to pay more than £5 for them.

He said that those offering the notes for sale have not even received them.

“Anyone who wants one of the notes can log onto the georgebestfive.com website pay £5 and the bank will send them a George Best note,” he said.

He added that with 1,000,000 of the notes being printed those interested should not have to pay more than the face value - unless they were being auctioned by a registered charity.
