Farmers line up to leverage land

A GROWING number of farmers are lining up to leverage the value of their land and re-route the proceeds into “off-farm” investments.
Off-farm investment is a growing sector in Ireland. An increasing number of farmers are choosing to invest in non-farm related projects (in particular in commercial property sydicates) by using the massively increased value locked up in their land to secure bank borrowing for investment.
A survey by Cork based consultant Denis Barrett from Barrett Cahill Auctioneers found that nearly 60% of the 200 farmers surveyed are intending to invest off-farm within the next 12 months
