Roscommon medal sold for €20,000

One of the medals awarded to a player in Roscommon’s first All-Ireland Football title has fetched €20,000 at auction.

The 9ct GAA celtic cross style medal was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder at auction in Dublin this afternoon.

The 1943 All-Ireland win was the first of a two in a row for the County team which was captained by the late Jimmy Murray.

Mealy’s Auctioneers had a reserve of between €2,500 and €3,500 for the medal which was lot 803 at the auction held in the Tara Towers Hotel in Dublin today.

A unique set of All-Ireland Senior Football medals Wexford’s four-in-row, 1915, 16, 17, & 1918 fetched E24,000.

The Wexford medals had been won by Wexford’s Jim Byrne.

George Mealy of Mealy Auctioneers said the price fetched for the Roscommon medal had exceeded all expectations.
