Irish Land Sales Buoyant

Published January 8th, 2008

Improvement’s in commodity prices has helped the return of land owners to the bidding arena, according to Tom Crosse of GVM Auctioneers in Limerick, which reports a buoyant 2007 with its land sales on a par with 2006.

The company sold a total of 1,970ac in the Limerick region in the past year. Sixty-two per cent of these sales were by public auction, with the remainder by private treaty.

“The average price per acre achieved was €16,780/ac, representing total sales of approximately €33m,” Mr Crosse stated. “A noticeable feature of the sales was the return of the land owner to the bidding arena.

“Many farmers were unable to compete in recent years. However, the improvement in milk/beef/grain prices has injected some confidence and GVM Auctioneers sees this trend continuing into 2008.”
