A European collector paid a world-record of nearly $750 000 at a Paris auction on Tuesday for 26 letters from French philosopher Voltaire to Russian empress Catherine the Great, auctioneers Sotheby’s said.

John Lennon letter sold for £12,000

A letter from John Lennon denying that the Beatles “ripped off” black music fetched £12,000 at auction yesterday.
Dashed off on a piece of “American Airlines” headed notepaper, the letter was a response to a newspaper article accusing the Beatles of imitating and exploiting American black music in their early cover records.

St Andrews golfing booklet sells for £3,000

A 109-year-old booklet about the history of St Andrews world-famous golf courses has fetched £3,300 at auction.
The publication, entitled The Links of St Andrews 1897, was written by A. Bennett, who is understood to have lived in the town.
